Chapter information

ABS-SoCal generally meet once a month on the third Saturday of the month. Most meetings are held at Quail Botanical Gardens in Encinitas, CA. Additionally, members will often allow their residences to be used as meeting places in order to show bamboos and foster fellowship. In most cases one learns something entirely new about bamboo cultivation at each of these meetings. Sometimes field trips to botanical gardens and other places such as museums are made to help educate our members about bamboo. We also invite academic and commercial speakers as well as accomplished musicians to present more information about bamboos to the members and to the public alike.

We maintain an extensive collection of rare bamboos both in pots and in the ground at Quail Botanical Gardens. The potted collection of bamboos, known variously as the reference or index collection, is partially housed in a shade house to facilitate the needs of the shade-loving bamboos while the sun-loving types are grown in full sun. Members volunteer their time to maintain this collection and propagate these bamboos for sales to the public. We add to our collection of rare bamboos via the use of a quarantine greenhouse and federal importation permit.

Membership costs $15 a year. Benefits of membership include a one year (6 issue) subscription to Southern California Bamboo which is the newsletter of ABS-SoCal. Free admittance to Quail Botanical Gardens on sale days is another membership benefit. Many of our members are also joint members with the American Bamboo Society which is our parent organization. Joint membership is available for a total of $40 per year and includes the benefits of ABS-SoCal membership plus an additional subscription (6 issues per year) to BAMBOO which is the magazine of the national organization.
